The Correct Way To Clear Snow

One thing you can count on living on the South Shore is a snowy winter! Heavy snowfall is not unusual this time of the year and with it comes the task of clearing it.

Shoveling and clearing heavy snowfall is something you will encounter from time to time while living in New England. Shoveling snow may seem like a simple enough activity, there is a correct way to do it that will make it easier and keep you from getting injured.

Shoveling

Whether you are clearing out a parking space or shoveling an entire driveway, shoveling snow is a necessary task that often comes with injury. Shoveling snow should be seen as a form of exercise rather than a chore. You want to make sure you take breaks so you can drink water and rest your body. People tend to try and get it all done quickly without breaks which can lead to exhaustion and injury.

Proper shoveling form is also important so you don’t injure your back. Always make sure you bend at the knees and lift with your knees rather than your back. When you turn to place the snow elsewhere make sure you are fully rotating instead of twisting at your back.

Clearing Off Your Car

Clearing snow off of a car is something we all try to do as quickly as possible so we can get to where we are going. Instead of trying to do it quickly, try to do it completely.

It is important when you are clearing off your car to do it completely. Clear all of the snow and ice before you hit the road. Ignoring your roof can be extremely dangerous when a big sheet of show or ice slides off of your car and blinds the driver behind you.

Before a snowstorm it is helpful to leave your windshield wipers up to prevent them from freezing to your car, making clearing your windshield easier. You can also cover your side mirrors in plastic bags so they won’t ice up overnight.

Never use hot or warm water to try and melt the snow and ice off of your windshield! The abrupt temperature change will make your windshield crack.

Also never use a shovel to clear snow from a car because that will lead to scrapes and other damage.

Finding your next home can be stressful - but it doesn't have to be.
